What is LED Driver?
 

LED driver is a device that does exactly what it sounds like — it drives power to one or more LEDs. LED drivers are also called LED power supply or LED transformer.

 

As we mentioned before, one of the benefits of LEDs is that they are energy efficient – they don’t require a lot of electricity to run them. LEDs actually operate on DC at reasonably low voltages – usually between 2V and 4V. Because of this, they need something to convert AC to DC for them and help protect them from any power surges that might occur, causing the LEDs to overheat and cause problems. The LED driver is not only a current management system but also a protective buffer.

1.Constant Voltage (CV) Power Supply

A constant voltage power supply delivers a fixed DC output voltage (typically 12V or 24V for LED strips), while the output current automatically changes according to the actual load. It is designed for LED strips with built-in current-limiting resistors. Multiple strips can be connected in parallel easily. This type is widely used for common low-power indoor LED lighting.

3.Brightness drift over time
LED forward voltage changes with temperature and aging, leading to slight brightness variation.

2.Constant Current (CC) Power Supply

 

A constant current power supply maintains a stable fixed output current (such as 350mA, 700mA) during operation, and the output voltage adjusts dynamically to fit the load requirements. It focuses on controlling current to prevent LEDs from being damaged by overcurrent. It is mainly applied to high-power COB strips, high-density LED strips and single high-brightness LED lights, ensuring consistent luminous performance and longer lifespan.

1.Complicated installation
Mostly for series connection; load quantity must match the driver’s rated range strictly.

2.Costs more than common CV drivers with the same power.
3.Poor parallel performance
Not recommended for direct parallel use, easy to cause uneven current distribution.
4.Fixed current limitation
Cannot be mixed with ordinary voltage-type LED strips.
