Many LED neon flex projects struggle to achieve a smooth, dot-free appearance because the LED strip, neon profile size, and diffusion distance are not properly matched.

Even high-quality LED strips can show visible hot spots when the neon housing does not provide enough space for light mixing.

To achieve dotless LED neon flex, designers need to consider two key factors:

*Neon flex size

*LED density

This guide explains how different LED densities behave in different sizes of neon tubes.

Why Do LED Neon Flex Lights Show Hot Spots?

LED Neon Flex is a linear light that is designed to produce a seamless line of light. After installation, some projects may have noticeable bright dots or uneven lighting. This is usually due to the mismatch between LED strip, silicone housing and light diffusion design.

There are three key factors to consider that will impact on whether a neon flex will give you a smooth, dotless lighting effect.

LED Density Determines the Required Mixing Distance

Relationship Between LED Pitch and Light Mixing Distance in Neon Flex

As shown in the diagram, LED spacing affects how smoothly the light blends inside the neon flex.

If the led strip is low density, the leds are further apart (larger d1). The light needs more space to mix. If the neon tube is too low (smaller than h1), the LED dots are still visible with bright spots on the surface.

High density LED strips have LEDs closer together (smaller d2). The light blends faster, so even in smaller neon profiles where there is less space, you get a smoother, more seamless glow.

In short, low-density LED strips need more mixing space, while high-density LED strips provide better dot-free lighting performance in compact neon flex designs.

Neon Tube Size Determines Available Diffusion Space

Effect of neon tube height on LED light diffusion and hot spot

LED density is not the only factor that affects light uniformity. The size of the silicone neon tube also matters.

In the diagram, H1 is the ideal mixing distance, where the LED light merges together to form a smooth line without dots.

If the tube height is smaller than H1 (for example, H2), the space for the light spreading is less. It may make the LED dots or bright spots visible. Small neon profiles often require more LED to achieve a smooth effect.

H3 has a bigger profile which allows more room for light mixing and helps create a more even glow. But that doesn't mean higher LED density is always good. Cost may be added for more expensive extra-high density LEDs in a bigger tube without a visible benefit.

Therefore, LED density should always be selected together with the neon profile size instead of being considered separately.

3. Silicone Diffuser Material

The silicone cover does more than protect the LED strip. Manufactured from high-grade silicone (polysiloxanes), the diffuser plays an important role in achieving dotless LED neon flex lighting performance.

A good neon silicone diffuser will be balanced for light transmission, diffusion and thickness. High transparency silicone to improve brightness; proper diffusion to help the LED light to mixed into a smooth and continuous line; Thicker silicone layer gives more room of light mixing and help to create a cleaner and more uniform dotless led neon lighting effect.

For projects requiring additional diffusion, Refer to neon tube LED diffuser for aluminum channel.

Recommended LED Density for Different Neon Flex Sizes

The following chart provides a general recommendation based on neon profile size and LED density. Actual results may vary depending on silicone diffusion, viewing distance, and installation conditions.

This table shows which neon tube sizes (e.g., S0612 = 6mm wide × 12mm high) work with various LED strip densities and chip types (2835, 5050, or COB). The letters indicate: S=Side Bending, T=Top Bending, 3D=flexible for bending, D=Diameter (360° neon). A checkmark (√) indicates a recommended combination for achieving a smooth appearance, while a cross (✕) means visible dots may occur.

How to Choose LED Density for Different Neon Flex Applications

The right LED density depends on the neon flex size, viewing distance, and lighting effect you need.

A small neon flex used for signage is usually viewed up close, so it requires higher LED density to avoid visible light spots. Larger neon flex installed on buildings or outdoor projects is viewed from farther away, so medium-density LED strips can often provide enough uniformity.

1. Small Neon Flex for Signage and Decorative Details

Small neon profiles such as 4×8mm, 6×12mm and 8×16mm are popular for channel letters, logo illumination, retail signs, decorative outlines and small display projects.

Because the internal space is limited, the LED light has less room to diffuse. Low-density LED strips may create visible dots when viewed from a short distance.

Recommended LED density:

For close-view applications, 120LED/m and above is usually recommended. Extra-high density COB strips are preferred when a completely seamless appearance is required.

2. Architectural and Interior Linear Lighting

Neon profiles in the medium size, such as 10×10mm, 12×25mm and 16×16mm are used for indoor decorative and architectural lighting.

These profiles offer a better light diffusion, which allow medium and high density led strips to produce a smooth linear effect.

Recommended LED density:

3. Large Neon Flex for Outdoor and Long-Distance Viewing

Large neon profiles such as 16×16mm, 20×20mm, and larger sizes provide more space for light mixing.

For outdoor installations viewed from several meters away, medium-density LED strips can usually achieve a good uniform effect.

Recommended LED density:

Engineering Tip

There is no universal "best" LED density for every neon flex project.

The ideal choice depends on the neon flex size, LED spacing, viewing distance, and required lighting effect.

Higher LED density improves light uniformity, but the best solution is choosing the right LED density for the specific application.

COB vs SMD LED Strip: Which Is Better for Dotless LED Neon Flex?

suitable LED silicon neon light for different LED COB strips

COB and SMD LED strips can both be used for neon flex lighting, but they are suitable for different needs.

Dotless LED neon flex projects often utilise COB LED strips as the close packing of chips produces a smoother, more continuous glow. Being a good choice for projects where the neon light is directly visible and a premium seamless LED neon lighting effect is required.

SMD LED strips offer a more common and flexible option. They have good brightness, efficiency and more options for different colors and power levels. When the right LED density and neon size are selected, SMD strips can also achieve a smooth lighting effect.

In short, COB is better for high-end dotless lighting, while high-density SMD is a cost-effective choice for many commercial projects.

Understanding LED Neon Flex Top Bending and Side Bending

suitable LED silicon neon light for different LED COB stripssuitable LED silicon neon light for different LED COB strips

The model numbering (e.g., 1220, 1616) corresponds directly to the width and height of the cross-section (in mm).

*Width: 12mm, 16mm

*Height: 20mm, 16mm

The prefix reveals the light emission logic: "T" stands for Top Bending, where the flex bends vertically along its width (up and down). "S" stands for Side Bending, where the flex bends horizontally along its thickness (left and right).
